Events I A Taste of True CraftsmanshipApr 21, 2019
There may not be another place anywhere in the world with as much design authenticity and history as Italy. Home to many luxurious brands, the country has become an utter rhapsody for any and every designer. It therefore comes with no surprise that we thoroughly embraced the opportunity to travel to Italy with leading furniture Company Poltrona Frau Group to discover their brands origins.
Upon our arrival into Rome, we were greeted by a cheery chauffeur who accompanied us the two and a half hour drive to Tolentino, Italy. It was here a that a bright orange façade boasted the entrance to the Poltrona Frau museum; commencing the onset to our cultural adventure.
Exposed to the very beginnings of Poltrona Frau with a 1919 armchair and an advertising campaign from 1924 showing a woman smoking whilst relaxed on a 128 armchair, it became evident that even from their commencement Poltrona Frau aimed to reinvent furniture manufacturing by elevating its name to become known for exquisite production, yet remained unafraid to break the boundaries whilst doing so.
When our tour came to an end, we were escorted through the Poltrona Frau workshop and development center where we got to experience first hand the utter mastery devoted to each bespoke piece, all of which are curated by hand.
The next part of our journey continued in Milan where famed architect and designer Patricia Urquiola toured us around the beautiful showroom of Cassina which showcased latest collections including the Dress-Up! Sofa by Rodolfo Dordoni, the Cotone Sofa by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, the Volage Ex-S dressed in new fabric, by Philippe Stark and Patricia’s own Back-Wing chair made exclusively from Apple Ten Lork: an original material made from apples! Patricia’s passion for sustainable design flourished throughout the whole visit and we cannot wait to see what innovations Patricia and the Cassina brand conjure up next!
Just before our amazing trip came to an end, we had the pleasure of visiting one of the two Cappellini showrooms in Milan, with art director Giulio Cappellini. Surrounded by the traditional architecture of Milan, Cappellini offered nothing short of colour bombs and quirky styling in a jaw-dropping display of their iconic pieces, part of the brand’s exhibition: Cappellini, Thirty Years of Icons.
It is with thanks to commercial director of Poltrona Frau Group ME Gianni Sharrouf, along with all of the incredible directors we met, that we got to experience the true craftsmanship that each individual brand devotes to their pieces. A huge pleasure, and a trip that will remain humble in our memory!
