Intercontinental
The Intercontinental Hotel is an existing infrastructure set within the city of Muscat, Oman. The current hotel has stood for the last 40 years, and as such has become an integral part of the local culture, becoming almost a landmark in itself. Beautiful history exudes from its roots, with 70% of Omani marriages taking place there. The hotel has become a distinguished institution in its own right, with a certain elegance, attracting a particular type of Clientele. With the desire to maintain this same level of sophistication and style, the new hotel design will take more of a re-using approach rather than replacing. The design direction will be elegant, timeless and contemporary with a focus on the main key elements being the atrium barrel vaulted ceiling, introduction of copper, patterns, atrium façade pillars and styling. An emotional narrative will be created, enforcing recollection of memory and connection to the previous design as well as to the local heritage.

The ideology behind the new interior design as a whole is to not destroy or replace the hotels DNA, but rather to evolve it to the present day and guest expectations. We shall celebrate the current features but create new identities for them, ensuring that the hotel stands the test of time and reflects the local society without appearing faux or thematic. Current colour pallets and finishes will be maintained as much as possible, but we will explore and play with new ways to integrate them into the new design. The styling of furniture will align with the overall elegant, timeless and contemporary direction using light materials, contemporary forms, again paying tribute to the existing interior architecture. A new identity, but still remaining true to its humble beginnings, the evolved design for the Intercontinental Muscat will preserve and respect its current sentiments, but also bring it to today’s standard of living and people’s expectations.
